A credential is not the whole practice model

Start with the person or organisation that is accountable for the service. Then describe each practitioner’s actual role, competence, current credential status, supervision where applicable, and the routes for consent, safeguarding, complaints and escalation. Do not use a credential title as shorthand for legal compliance, a protected professional title, or permission to provide every kind of service.

  • Check the current status. Only use a credential title or badge where the individual is entitled to do so and it can be verified through the relevant register.
  • Describe the role, not only initials. Say who leads assessment, approves plans, reviews data, supervises implementation and holds clinical responsibility.
  • Make supervision real and visible. Where a credential, employer, contract or service model requires supervision, identify the supervisor, scope, frequency, escalation and record. Do not imply that UK-SBA itself provides that supervision.
  • Keep accountability with the actual provider. The independent practitioner, partnership or company must still meet the service’s UK legal, contractual and governance requirements.

Current UK credential landscape

Position checked 14 September 2026. Credential routes, eligibility and jurisdiction rules can change. Verify the live requirements with BACB and UK-SBA before relying on this summary or making a public claim.

UKBA(cert)

UK-SBA describes UKBA(cert) as its postgraduate-level certification for behaviour analysis in the UK. UK-SBA’s register and PSA Quality Mark are relevant only while a person is currently searchable on the register, and only for work undertaken in the UK.

BCBA and BCBA-D

Existing BACB certificants in the UK can maintain their certification. Since 1 January 2026, UK residents can no longer apply for a new BACB certification. UK-SBA currently lists BCBA and BCBA-D as Route E evidence for an application to UKBA(cert); that route includes UK-context requirements and probationary status.

BCaBA

BACB defines BCaBA as an undergraduate-level professional who practises under BCBA or FL-CBA supervision. Do not present BCaBA as an independent-practice credential or collapse it into the BCBA/UKBA(cert) role. Describe the actual supervisory and accountable arrangement.

Who is accountable for the service?

Use this question before deciding what to say on a website, agreement, referral form or care plan. In a sole practice, the lead practitioner may also be the provider. In a company, partnership or commissioned service, the provider and the lead practitioner can be different people. The public-facing wording should make both intelligible.

Lead / accountable practitioner

State who is responsible for the clinical or professional decisions within their competence: assessment, recommendations or plans, review, significant changes, referral and escalation. Their credential is one part of the information clients need.

Supervised practitioner or implementer

State what they may do, who supervises, how instructions and concerns are escalated, and who reviews their work. The arrangement must match the person’s competence, credential rules, employer arrangements and service risk.

Provider / contracting party

State who enters the agreement, invoices, controls records and data, operates the complaints route and maintains continuity. A credentialed individual may work for a provider without being the contracting party.

Use plain, verifiable wording

Use the credential exactly as the issuing body permits, and give the client the information needed to understand the role. For example:

  • “[Name] is an active BCBA. They lead assessment and plan review for this service.”
  • “[Name] is a UKBA(cert) currently searchable on the UK-SBA register. They lead this service within their scope of competence.”
  • “[Name] holds a BCaBA credential and works under the supervision of [name and role]. [Accountable practitioner] is responsible for plan approval and review.”

Do not use “BCBA”, “UKBA(cert)” or “BCaBA” to imply that every person with that credential provides the same service, is employed by the practice, is registered with every relevant UK body, or can take on work outside their competence.
